LinkedIn Video Length Guidelines: Everything You Need to Know

You may be wondering, “Just how long can a video be on LinkedIn?”

Good question.

According to LinkedIn’s Help Topic, the answer is different if you’re uploading videos to LinkedIn using a computer vs. a mobile phone.

Using LinkedIn’s mobile app the maximum video duration is 10 minutes. While the maximum video duration on a computer is 15 minutes. Who knew?

So that means you get 5 extra minutes when you use your computer. Hmm.

But, just because you CAN upload videos to LinkedIn that are between 10-15 minutes long, should you?

Heck no!

Most video marketing studies suggest that 2 minutes is about the longest people stick around to watch a social media video. And actually, you’re better off aiming to make videos that are between 30-90 seconds.

When you make a short video, it’s best to get right to the point. You don’t want to fiddle around with some long-winded introduction of who you are. And you want to resist the urge of beginning your video with lots of swirling-twirling graphics, your company logo, and intro music.

Nobody’s got time for that. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

Instead, start off your video with your own smiling face. And then draw in your viewer with something of that will catch their interest.

You’ve only got a few seconds to get their attention. Viewers want to know – “what’s in it for me?”

One tip I use is to begin my videos with asking a question. That seems to get people’s attention as they contemplate their answer.

Okay, so now we know about LinkedIn’s native video duration length, you may be wondering, “So, what about external links to YouTube or Vimeo?”

Well the good news is that the length of videos hosted off of LinkedIn doesn’t matter. You can link to a YouTube video that’s 5 minutes or 5 hours. I guess the rule is… there is no rule.

But… the bad news is that external video links just don’t get much love or clicks. ๐Ÿ˜ž

LinkedIn really doesn’t want us to leave their platform. It kind of makes sense. LinkedIn wants to keep it’s members on LinkedIn.

If we leave the LinkedIn newsfeed to go watch someone’s webinar replay hosted on YouTube, we might get distracted by cat videos and never come back.

Okay, so what about LinkedIn Live? Is there any rule on how long a live video event should be?

Well according to LinkedIn, the maximum length of a livestream is 4 hours. Yowsa! That’s pretty long.

However, it seems that most LinkedIn Lives fall between 30-60 minutes.

I myself host a LinkedIn Live every Tuesday at 10am Pacific Time for 30 minutes. The format of my show is to just have a casual chat with an interesting guest. Pretty much every one of my guest agrees that a half hour feels just about right.

LinkedIn actually suggests a recommended minimum livestream of at least 10 minutes. This kind of makes sense. If you’re going to go shorter than that you might as well just post a video.
